「イメージとしての〈日本〉」セッション
We have designed an installation with the aim of representing the diffusion of the image of Japan. We have placed keywords expressing the image of Japan as well as selected pictures and objects symbolizing those keywords onto this installation. We believe that when these fragmented keywords come together as a whole, an accurate representation of the image of Japan is reconstructed.
There are various narratives within this installation. For example, a narrative will revolve around the themes of the ways in which Japan promotes its self-image abroad, and in contrast, the other narrative will revolve around the themes of how the image of Japan is reproduced overseas. A certain keyword may be propagated by Japan to promote its self-image abroad, but overseas another keyword could be tied to it, thus changing the original meaning and bringing about a new image. When misunderstood keywords are appropriated, what happens is that their misuse produces a new meaning, and images are linked together and diffused.
Within this age of globalization, Japan cannot be simply described as a country of one sole national identity. We believe that the images and their links and diffusions as represented on this installation are themselves an accurate representation of the shape of Japan within globalization. That is the theme of this symposium, “‘Japan’ as Image”.
このインスタレーションで私たちは、拡散していく日本イメージを表現しようとしています。私たちは、日本のイメージを表すキーワードと、そのキーワードを象徴する絵や物を選び、インスタレーションの上に並べました。これらの断片的なキーワードが総体となって、現在の日本イメージが構成されていると私たちは考えています。このインスタレーションの上には様々な物語があります。たとえば日本それ自身がどういう自己イメージを海外に向けて発信しているのかという物語と、逆に、海外でどういう日本イメージが生産されているのかという物語です。日本それ自身が自己イメージとして発信しようとするキーワードが、海外では別のキーワードと結びつけられ、その意味を変えられて、また別のイメージを生み出していきます。キーワードが誤読され流用されることで新たな意味が生産され、イメージが連鎖し拡散していくのです。グローバル化する世界においては、日本は単一のナショナルイメージを持った確固たる存在ではありません。このインスタレーションが示すようなイメージの連鎖と拡散それ自体がグローバリゼーションの中の日本の姿であると私たちは考えています。それが今回のシンポジウムのテーマ「イメージとしての〈日本〉」です。

みなさんと作るイメージとしての〈日本〉の地図とは？
There are two purposes for which we made this installation. One is that we wanted to visually clarify the links and diffusion within the images of Japan. Through the use of this installation, the mutual links between the papers of the five speakers themselves have also been portrayed in a visual manner. The second is to persuade the audience into producing new narratives impromptu regarding the image of Japan. The narratives we have presented today have been no more than a reading of one part of the installation. As audience members map their own images of Japan onto the installation, new narratives can be read.
私たちがこのインスタレーションを作った理由は2つあります。一つは、日本イメージの連鎖と拡散を視覚的に明らかにするためです。このインスタレーションを用いることで、5人の論文が提示する物語が相互に連鎖していることが視覚的に表現されているのです。もう一つの理由は、皆さんの発想を刺激して、日本イメージについての別の物語をこの場で作るためです。私たちが提示した物語は、このインスタレーションの一部を読み解いたにすぎません。皆さんが抱いている日本のイメージをこのインスタレーションの上にマッピングすることで、そこから別の物語が読み解けるのではないでしょうか。
