Contemporary Japanese Culture
Society and Culture of Postwar Japan 2012
Japanese society and culture have experienced drastic transformation since the defeat in the World War II. This course outlines social and cultural changes postwar Japan has undergone. This course also gives an overview of cultural diversity of contemporary Japan and rethinks the conventional view of Japanese society as monocultural.
Contemporary Japanese Thought
Philosophy, Religion and Society 2012
In addressing the political, historical and cultural issues that have dominated Japanese society after World War II, the course will cross a range of disciplines, including intellectual/cultural history, literary theory, philosophy, ethics and religion. A special focus will be put on the thoughts on civil society movement as well as new religious movement in modern Japan.
Cultural Anthropology
This course studies culture and education from the approach of Educational Anthropology and other relevant fields on culture and learning. After studying basic theories and concepts related to culture and individuals, this course examines issues and cases of human development in different communities as well as in different periods. It then analyzes some issues and cases of education in Japan in comparison with those in Europe and in other regions.
Modern Japanese History
Modern Japanese History (Diplomacy and Politics) 2012
The course will be conducted in a seminar-style format where students will make individual presentations. There will be ample time left for a lively discussion and active student participation will be highly encouraged. See below for a general overview of the topics to be examined.

Contextualizing Modern Japanese Popular Music : Western impact, Reaction and Transculturation 2012
This course outlines social and cultural history of Japanese popular music since the Meiji period, focusing on the issues of hybridization, cultural authenticity and nationalism.
