Excavation of Nonaka Kofun

The excavation of Nonaka Kofun in the spring and summer of 1964 proved to be a highly productive endeavor. The following videos, recorded by field investigation leader Mr. Kōhei Kitano (then Research Assistant) show the excavation work that resulted in a series of important archaeological discoveries.

Unearthing stoneware from the Korean Peninsula, Sue ware, and talc imitation goods (approx. 7 minutes)
As excavators dug through the surface of the tomb, which was matted thickly with roots, many pieces of pottery were unearthed. This video shows the discovery of stoneware from the Korean Peninsula, Sue ware, and talc imitation goods.

Excavating Nonaka Kofun #2

Weapons and armor (approx. 5 minutes)
Approximately one meter below ground level, iron plates covered in reddish-brown rust were discovered. Further investigations revealed an impressive collection of armor arranged in a row. This video features the excavation of armor, helmets, and iron swords, daggers, and arrowheads.

Excavating Nonaka Kofun #3

Unearthing helmets and the armor (approx. 3 minutes)
Once strong and robust, iron helmet and armor slowly corrodes away after being buried in the ground for centuries. This video shows how rusted armor was unearthed to once again see the light of day.
