Graduate school application procedure

The Graduate School of Letters of Osaka University has accepted many international students. The Graduate School features extraordinary faculty members, unparalleled by any in other universities. Experiences at the Graduate School will be extremely profitable and enjoyable, with ample opportunities to develop friendships with Japanese and international students from other countries.

For detailed information about entry to the Graduate School, please refer to Application Guidebook (Japanese only), since this page only outlines Graduate School application procedures. International students are roughly classified into

  1. Research Students (School of Letters/Graduate School of Letters)
  2. Masters Students
  3. Pre-PhD/Masters Students
  4. PhD Students

Admission Requirements

Requirements for admission to the Graduate School (Masters, Pre-PhD/Masters, and PhD programmes) are as follows (Notice that in case the following descriptions contradict the contents of the Application Guidebook, please refer to the latter):

Masters Programme

International students who have graduated from the School of Letters of Osaka University; and international students who will have studied at least six months before April 2008 either at the School of Letters or the Graduate School of Letters of Osaka University as research students, and who satisfy any of the following conditions:

  1. Those who have graduated from a Japanese university, or expect to graduate from a Japanese university in March 2008
  2. Those who have received a bachelor's degree, or expect to obtain the said degree from the National Institution for Academic Degrees by March 2008
  3. Those who have completed, or expect to complete 16 years of school education overseas by March 2008
  4. Those who have completed, or expect to complete 16 years of distance education in Japan provided by relevant overseas countries by March 2008
  5. Those approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  6. Those who have completed, or expect to complete 15 years of school education in overseas countries or distance education in Japan, both provided by relevant overseas countries, and who have obtained specified numbers of credits at the Graduate School of Letters with excellent academic results
  7. Those who are at least 22 years old by March 31, 2008, and who, on the basis of the applicant screening, are recognized by the Graduate School of Letters as having academic ability equivalent or superior to university graduates
  8. Those who are recognized by the Graduate School of Letters as having academic ability equivalent or superior to university graduates

Pre-PhD/Masters Programme

As for Masters Programme

PhD Programme

International students who satisfy any of the following conditions:

  1. Those who have obtained or expect to obtain a master's degree from Japanese universities by March 2008
  2. Those who at an overseas university have completed programmes equivalent to Masters or Pre-PhD/Masters programmes of Osaka University, or expect to complete such programmes by March 2008
  3. Those who have completed distance education in Japan provided by relevant overseas countries and obtained a degree equivalent to a master's degree, or expect to complete such education and obtain such degree by March 2008
  4. Those approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  5. Those who are at least 24 years old by March 31, 2008, and who, on the basis of the applicant screening, are recognized by the Graduate School of Letters as having academic ability equivalent or superior to master's degree holders
  6. Those who are recognized by the Graduate School of Letters as having academic ability equivalent or superior to master's degree holders

Number of Students to be admitted

The Graduate School of Letters of Osaka University offers three programmes: a Masters, a Pre-PhD/Masters and a PhD programme. For the Masters programme, four courses are offered in the Division of Studies on Cultural Dynamics. For the Pre-PhD/Masters and PhD programmes, a total of 23 specialized study areas are offered in two Divisions: Studies on Cultural Forms and Studies on Cultural Expression. This year, students will be admitted to the four courses in the Division of Studies on Cultural Dynamics, and the 23 specialized study areas in the Divisions of Studies on Cultural Forms and Studies on Cultural Expression. The number of international students accepted for each programme is not fixed. Screening Methods

The Graduate School of Letters has three types of admission examinations each for its Masters, Pre-PhD/Masters and PhD programmes: regular, mature students, and international students. Here we offer information for international students. For information on the other types of examinations please refer to Japanese pages of this site.

Masters Programme

Applicants will be screened on the basis of results of the written and oral examinations, a submitted research report, and academic records of the schools they graduated from. The written examinations will be on Japanese language proficiency and knowledge of the applicant's specialized field. For further details of the written examinations refer to the Application Guidebook.

Pre-PhD/Masters Programme

PhD Programme

Applicants will be screened on the basis of the results of the written and oral examinations, academic records of the schools they graduated from, and submitted theses. For further details of the written examination refer to the Application Guidebook.

Application procedures

Read the Application Guidebook thoroughly, and follow its instructions carefully. The schedule for the 2008-2009 academic year admission is as follows (Please note all dates are for 2008.):

January 7 – 10:
Application period (Application forms should be mailed.)
February 12:
Written and oral examinations for Masters and Pre-PhD/Masters programmes
February 15:
Written and oral examinations for PhD programme
February 21:
Announcement of examination results for all applicants (Results will be posted on a bulletin board and mailed to applicants.)
March 13 - 14:
Enrolment procedures for all new graduate students (on campus)

School fee to be paid prior to entrance

(Masters, Pre-PhD/Masters and PhD programmes)

Admission fee:
282,000 yen
Tuition:
267,900 yen (for 1st semester; annual tuition amounts to 535,800 yen)
