In this major course, students can study art history from a broad perspective. In addition to painting and sculpture, various image-related issues, encompassing architecture and industrial arts, are studied in terms of style, meaning etc. The faculty comprises specialists in the arts of South and Southeast Asia, Buddhist arts of Japan and China, medieval and modern Japanese paintings, Italian arts from the 13th to the 17th century, and modern and contemporary Western arts. In addition to lectures and seminars in the history of art from the prehistoric era to the present day, students visit museums, museums of fine arts, temples and shrines. Specialist researchers are invited from outside the University to lecture on themes uncovered by faculty members. Also, close relations are maintained with other major courses dedicated to logical studies of art.
