Ethics

"Ethics" is an academic field wherein researchers seek from various aspects the meaning of living, communicating and acting in society, together with many other people. In our society, people live and die with different customs, beliefs, languages and genders, and in addition, various other forms of life also exist in our environment. With changes in life and society, questions of ethics also change and diversify. Today, the scope of ethics includes issues concerning pleasure and pain, values, time, history, communities, self and others, violence, justice, contingency, language, emotion, body, sex, communication, life, environment and information.

In this major course, students develop their thinking abilities through literal studies of the histories of ethics in Europe and modern Japan, social philosophy and cultural theory. Moreover, students select ethical themes, which they ponder and discuss with other students to seek solutions to their questions. Studies in the major course prepare students for advanced studies in "clinical philosophy" at the graduate level, where, in addition to literal and theoretical studies, students conduct practical case studies and develop their skills for discussion with specialists in other fields.
