English linguistics

The English Linguistics section features studies of generative grammar, functional grammar, cognitive linguistics and pragmatics, all primarily concerning English. In addition, graduate students study Relevance theory, semantics, history of English language, translation theory, etc. In all study areas, students are encouraged to learn carefully both English structure and practical usage. In addition, students are expected to read important papers and books in the literature, collect and analyze examples of practical usage, and understand the structure and various other characteristics of present-day English. Graduate students in this section have high-level achievements and are committed to the activities of relevant academic societies. Although many graduate students give priority to the studies in specialized areas, they must not forget their need to improve comprehensive English proficiency.

The section organizes "Machikaneyama Kotoba no Kai" several times a year, and publishes Osaka University Papers in English Linguistics (OUPEL), which is carried in the MLA International Bibliography.
