The Studies on Modern Thought and Culture section became independent in fiscal 1998 from the Philosophy and History of Philosophy section.
The objectives of establishing the new section were to address various pressing social and cultural problems currently confronting society, from a philosophical perspective, on the basis of studies in modern and contemporary Western philosophy.
Studies of Modern Thought and Culture encompass French philosophy from Descartes to contemporary philosophers, German idealism, philosophy of life, existentialism, ontology, hermeneutics, phenomenology etc. On the basis of such diverse basic study, students are encouraged to commit themselves to studying, from a philosophical perspective, various contemporary problems concerning life, environment, science, technology and religion.
Activities in this section are developed in close partnership with those in the programs of Philosophy and History of Philosophy. Academic meetings and discussions on books are frequently held with students of other fields of study.
