My teaching and research focuses on the relationships between European countries (Britain, France, Germany, and Italy) and the ‘overseas’ world, especially Africa, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. I have recently written a book on Overseas Economic Relations and Statehood in Europe, 1860s-1970s. Related topics of interest include European colonialism, doctrines of development, political and economic thought in international relations, mass violence,and transnational labour relations. Currently I am investigating the experiences of workers from the Western Indian Ocean on European steamships.
