John Bundschuh researches Heian period Japanese translations of
Buddhist texts. This presentation challenges ideas about what should be considered the earliest narratives written in the Japanese language. Bundschuh will discuss how certain early translations of Buddhist sutras contain full narratives in the form of parables and tales of the Buddha. |

Nicholas Lambrecht is Assistant Professor of Global Japanese Studies
at Osaka University. His presentation, "No Place for Returns: Ri Kaisei's Past and Present Sakhalins," focuses on the ambiguous relationship between Ri Kaisei and his multiple homelands and discusses how the texts exhibit repatriativity. Andre Haag is Assistant Professor of Japanese Literature at the Univeristy of Hawaii. At this research workshop, he will present "Colonial Paranoia, Parody, and 'The Korea Problem': The Migrating Terms, Texts, and Terrors of Koreaphobia in Imperia Japanese Literature and Culture." |
